Comp-cut paddle tires are sand tires that have material removed to reduce weight. For a UTV dune setup, the question is whether that weight reduction is worth the added puncture risk, possible air leaks and altered-tire restrictions. Decide where you will ride and what compromises you can accept before selecting the comp-cut option.
What does comp cutting change?
The tire becomes lighter through additional preparation after manufacture. It is a separate choice from tire diameter, paddle count or paddle height. On R1's Packard Sand Light rear paddle tire listing, the size/HO selection and “Comp Cut by Tread Cuts” selection are separate options. An HO label does not tell you that a tire has been comp cut.
Packard describes a typical reduction of roughly 7–8 lb per rear tire where the service is offered. Treat that as the manufacturer's approximate guidance, not a guaranteed finished weight for every size or cut. Packard's sand tire overview also identifies comp cutting as third-party preparation with important limitations.
Compare weight on the same basis
If low weight is the reason you are considering a comp cut, ask for a comparison of the same tire model, size and paddle configuration before and after cutting. Do not subtract a general weight-saving claim from an unrelated tire specification.
- Is the number for one tire, a pair, or a complete mounted wheel-and-tire assembly?
- Is it an actual measurement or an approximate catalog figure?
- Does it include the selected wheel, beadlock ring and any preparation materials?
- Are the compared tires the same size and paddle version?
A lighter tire changes one part of the setup. It does not by itself establish an acceleration gain, solve an unsuitable paddle choice or confirm that the combination fits your UTV. Keep wheel selection, usable power, vehicle load and intended riding style in the conversation.
Understand the tradeoff before buying
The comp-cut information on R1's Sand Light listing warns that cutting thins the tire and increases susceptibility to punctures. Packard describes comp-cut use as sand-only and warns against rocks, sticks and wooded terrain. Exposed threads and small air leaks may occur, and tires with threads cut through require replacement. The listing also relays Packard's no-warranty and no-exchange/refund position on comp-cut tires.
Review the current terms for your exact R1 order before paying. Do not assume a general return-policy summary covers an altered tire. Ask who performs the cut, what happens if the tire arrives damaged or leaks, and which restrictions apply before preparation begins.
Plan for the whole route, including access roads and the drive between camp and the dunes. If it includes terrain the tire maker advises against, discuss a different tire or transport plan rather than treating an uncut paddle as an all-terrain substitute. Have a qualified installer evaluate questionable cords, cuts or air loss; a leak should not be dismissed as harmless because the tire is comp cut.
Choose the exact option, then check timing
R1 lists a comp-cut selector on Sand Light rear paddles and the 34x15-15 Big Foot Sport rear paddle. Select the tire configuration first, then check the Yes/No choice, selected variant's availability and quantity. A listed option is not a promise that every combination is ready to ship.
Third-party preparation can affect lead time. For a trip with a fixed departure date, confirm timing with R1 before ordering. Check whether the listing is per tire and whether mounting or wheels are included; do not infer a complete set from a product photo.
Five questions to settle before checkout
- Is this tire and cut appropriate for every part of my planned route?
- What is the expected finished weight for this exact configuration?
- Which warranty, return and damaged-tire terms apply to this order?
- Has the installer confirmed the wheel diameter, approved rim width and vehicle clearance?
- Can the selected tires be prepared, delivered and inspected before my trip?
For the rest of the combination, use our UTV paddle tire and wheel setup guide. Then compare Packard sand tires with those five answers in hand, or call R1 at 801-899-2520 to discuss your exact machine and plans.
