Installing LED whip lights on a UTV is straightforward when you plan the mount, wiring route and controls before drilling. This guide covers a typical two-whip, 12-volt setup using quick-release bases, a controller, fused power and a dash switch. Always follow the instructions supplied with your lights and your vehicle’s service information.

1. Test every component before installation
Lay out the complete system near the vehicle. Connect the whips, controller and harness temporarily to a fused 12-volt source. Confirm that both whips illuminate, the Bluetooth app connects, the RF remote responds and the switch operates correctly. Testing first separates a component issue from an installation or routing issue.
2. Choose strong mounting points
The two bases should sit on strong, flat and symmetrical locations. Rear cage crossbars, purpose-built cage brackets and reinforced bed-rail mounts are common. Avoid unsupported plastic and areas that interfere with doors, dump beds, spare tires, cargo, roof panels or suspension travel.
Check the complete installed height. Add the planned whip length, quick-release base and any spring mount to the height of the mounting surface. Make sure the whips clear your garage and trailer, or plan to remove them with the quick releases before transport and storage.
3. Plan the wiring route
Identify the controller location, power source, ground point, switch location and cable route to each whip before drilling. The controller should be protected from direct spray and excessive heat even when the whips themselves carry an ingress-protection rating. Keep every lead away from exhaust components, sharp edges, steering shafts, driveshafts and suspension travel.
Measure both controller-to-whip runs. If a lead cannot reach without tension or an unsafe shortcut, use a compatible extension. Do not splice a sealed lighting system unless the manufacturer specifically supports that method.
4. Disconnect power
Turn the vehicle off and disconnect the negative battery terminal before drilling or making final electrical connections. If the vehicle uses an accessory bus, pulse bar or manufacturer power block, follow its documented connection procedure and fuse limits.
5. Install the quick-release bases
Mark both locations and confirm the underside is clear. Drill only the hole required by the mount; the R1 Pro Series universal base uses a 1/2-inch mounting hole. Protect bare metal according to the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance. Install any supplied washer, lock washer or nut in the specified order and tighten the base so it cannot rotate.
If using spring mounts, install them between the vehicle mount and quick-release base as directed. A spring can add movement at the base, but it cannot compensate for thin or unsupported mounting material.
6. Route and protect the cables
Run the left and right whip leads toward the controller. Use existing frame or cage paths when practical, secure the loom at regular intervals and leave a small service loop near removable components. Use rubber grommets anywhere a wire passes through metal. Cable ties should hold the loom firmly without crushing it.
7. Connect the controller, switch, power and ground
Connect each whip to the correct controller output and fully seat any weather-resistant connectors. Install the rocker switch in a compatible dash opening or switch panel. Connect the harness to a properly fused 12-volt source and a clean chassis or battery ground according to the product instructions.
Never assume a wire’s function from color alone when working on the vehicle side. Verify power and ground with a meter and consult the vehicle wiring diagram. Adding an oversized fuse does not create more capacity; use the specified protection.
8. Reconnect power and test
Reconnect the battery and test the dash switch, RF remote and Bluetooth app. Confirm both whips display the same color and pattern, the quick-release connectors are fully seated and no wire becomes warm. Cycle the vehicle ignition if the system is connected to switched accessory power.
9. Finish the installation
Once testing is complete, secure the controller and final wire loom. Recheck the bases and move the steering, suspension, doors and bed through their operating range while watching the harness. After the first ride, inspect the hardware and cable ties again.
Common LED whip installation mistakes
- Drilling before measuring: total height and cable reach should be confirmed first.
- Mounting to weak plastic: vibration and leverage can damage the panel.
- Routing near heat: exhaust components can damage insulation quickly.
- Skipping fuse protection: every added circuit needs appropriate protection.
- Leaving connectors loose: partially seated plugs cause intermittent behavior and moisture problems.
- Ignoring moving parts: a safe route at rest may contact suspension or a dump bed in motion.
- Finalizing before testing: diagnose the system before hiding and tying every wire.

Choose a secure area away from exhaust heat, moving parts and direct spray, with enough access to service the connections.
Do I need a relay?
Use the supplied harness design. Do not add or remove relays based on guesswork; compare the system current requirement with the vehicle circuit and manufacturer instructions.
What if the included cables are too short?
