UTV Suspension Guide
If your UTV rides harsh, bottoms out, sags, feels unstable, or sits lower than it used to, the problem may be in the springs, shocks, ride-height setup, or worn suspension parts. The best fix depends on your machine, added weight, riding style, and current suspension condition.
What changes how a UTV suspension feels?
- Machine weight and passenger load
- Aftermarket bumpers, spare tires, audio, roofs, doors, storage, and accessories
- Spring rate and spring condition
- Shock valving and shock condition
- Preload and ride height
- Tire size and pressure
- Worn bushings, bearings, ball joints, tie rods, or other suspension parts
What are tender springs?
Tender springs are part of a dual-rate spring setup. Their job is to help control the first part of suspension travel before the main spring takes over. When tender springs wear or collapse, the machine can sit lower and move into the main spring sooner.
When should I consider a spring kit?
A spring kit can make sense when the factory springs no longer support the machine properly or when added accessories have changed the vehicle's weight. Always match the kit to the exact machine and the way it is equipped.
When do shocks need service?
Shock oil, seals, wear components, and nitrogen pressure can affect performance over time. Signs that deserve inspection include leaking shocks, inconsistent damping, excessive bouncing, harshness, unusual noise, or a noticeable decline in ride quality.
Should I adjust preload first?
Preload can change ride height and the point where the suspension operates in its travel, but it does not turn the wrong spring rate into the right one. If the machine needs excessive preload just to hold proper ride height, inspect the springs and overall setup.
Before you buy suspension parts
Confirm year, make, model, trim, seat count, front or rear application, suspension package, and any long-travel, lift, wheel, tire, or weight changes. Product-level fitment always takes priority over a broad machine category.
