UTV Trail Essentials
A good trail setup is less about piling on accessories and more about carrying the equipment that helps you handle common problems away from the truck. What you need depends on terrain, weather, distance, and how remote the ride is.
Recovery gear
- Winch or other appropriate recovery equipment
- Recovery strap or tow strap rated for the job
- Soft shackles or suitable recovery connections
- Gloves
Tire and wheel gear
- Tire repair kit
- Portable air source
- Correct wheel tools
- Spare tire when the ride or terrain calls for one
Basic tools and spare parts
- Machine-specific hand tools
- Fuses and electrical basics
- Drive belt when applicable
- Zip ties and tape for temporary trail-side repairs
- Any known weak-point spare that makes sense for your machine
Lighting and visibility
If you may be out after dark, make sure your headlights and auxiliary lighting work before leaving. LED whips, rock lights, and scene lighting can improve visibility around the machine, but they should be mounted and wired correctly.
Storage matters
Keep tools and recovery gear secured so they do not move around the cab or cargo area. Choose storage that matches your machine and does not block cooling, visibility, access panels, or suspension travel.
Before every ride
Check tire condition and pressure, fluid levels where applicable, lights, steering, brakes, belt condition, wheel hardware, suspension components, and anything that was recently installed or serviced.
