R1 buying guide
Polaris Ranger Replacement Engines: SOHC, DOHC & NorthStar
Choose the right Ranger engine family before comparing the price. Similar names do not guarantee the same assembly.
Ranger 1000, XP 1000 and NorthStar need different checks
Do not select a replacement from the “1000” badge alone. R1 carries separate CW listings for Ranger 1000 SOHC, Ranger XP 1000 DOHC, NorthStar and XD 1500 applications. Match the machine’s complete identity and original assembly number before comparing prices.
The word “Crew,” the cab configuration and a split model year can also matter. Keep a photo of the identification label and engine number with your order details so the selection can be checked before the build is arranged.
Start with the correct Ranger engine family

2017 Ranger XP 1000 DOHC
Use the separate 2017 application instead of assuming the later XP listing fits.

2018+ Ranger XP 1000 DOHC
Select the correct year from the product options and match the assembly number.

Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar
2021 is a split model year in this listing. Contact R1 to confirm the application.
Plan around how you use the Ranger
A work machine needs a repair plan you can schedule. Ask whether the replacement is built from your original core or supplied as an exchange, and confirm the current rebuild window before setting aside work time. A stated rebuild estimate is separate from freight transit and the shop’s installation schedule.
Tell the installer about towing, accessory loads, overheating history, oil use and any modifications. Those details help frame the diagnosis and the supporting work the machine may need. They do not change the need to select the exact engine application.
Compare the complete quote
Put the assembly price, refundable deposit, installation, fluids and any required supporting parts on the same worksheet. If the core has case damage or cannot be returned, ask R1 for the applicable terms before paying. A refundable deposit should be shown separately from the lasting cost of the repair.
Use the engine-replacement cost guide to organize the quote. If the confirmed failure is in the transmission, compare the CW transmission options instead.
Coverage and support
CW’s Polaris engine coverage is a six-month no-fault manufacturer warranty with exclusions. Review the complete warranty and core guide before choosing an engine, particularly if the Ranger has performance tuning or other modifications.
Replacement-unit shipping and core-return shipping are included within the lower 48 states. Rebuild time and transit time are separate; ask for the current schedule before planning a ride or booking installation.
For local diagnosis and installation questions, contact R1’s UTV repair team in Pleasant Grove. Installation is quoted separately from the online assembly price.
Questions before you order
Is Ranger 1000 the same as Ranger XP 1000?
Do not treat the names as interchangeable for engine ordering. The imported catalog has separate SOHC and DOHC listings, and the XP range also has year-specific options.
Which engine should I buy for a 2021 NorthStar?
Ask R1 to verify it using the VIN and original assembly number. CW identifies 2021 as a split-year application on the NorthStar listing.
